چکیده

The separation of charged kaons from the more copiously produced pions adds significantly to the analyzing power of e+edetectors. Time-of-flight techniques provide this separation up to about 1 GeV/c. However, at PEP and PETRA energies a large proportion of particles have momenta above this range. A useful device to tag kaons above 1 GeVjc would be a threshold Cerenkov counter. Due to the tight bunching of particles in jets, the counter must have high segmentation. Unfortunately the need to keep phototubes of a conventional counter outside a magnetic field makes a light guide system difficult if not impossible to design. For this reason Cerenkov counters which use proportional chambers to detect the ultraviolet art (1150-1350 8) P of the spectrum h ave been developed. -3 The proportional chambers are doped with a small amount of benzene. Benzene is chosen because it has a high photoionization probability in this wavelength range.

Continued Study of the Time Stability of a Small Water Cerenkov Detector

This note describes continued studies at Fermilab of the long term stability of a small water Cerenkov tank. The water tank, bag liner, water, photomultiplier tube, and data acquisition software were unchanged for the additional measurements from June to November, 1999. However, some details of the geometry of the trigger counters relative to the tank and of the electronics may have differed. T...

Design and Performance of the Lead-concrete Geiger Tower Array within the Hegra Experiment

The HEGRA experiment is a hybrid installation characterized by four diierent types of detectors (scintillator counters, open Cerenkov counters, Cerenkov telescopes and Geiger towers) located within one detector array. The Geiger towers are built with the objective to measure the local energy deposition and to reconstruct and identify muon tracks. In addition each tower may serve as an independe...

Optical Absorption Spectra of Some Potentially Interesting Gases for Ceren - Kov Counters

For gas Cerenkov counters employing wavelength shifters coupled to normal-gas phototubes, the vacuum ultraviolet transmission of the filler gas is of great interest. We have measured transmission to 1100 A for an optical path of one atmospheremeter of methane, ethane, Freon 14, propane, butane, isobutane, nitrogen, sulfur, hexafluoride, Freon 22, and methyl chloride. Aging results on wavelength...

Radiation Detectors in High Energy Physics*

Spark chambers, scintillation and Cerenkov detectors are used extensively in high energy physics experiments. The potential usefulness of semiconductor detectors is being investigated. There is a need for detectors which will identify very high energy particles. The various types of spark chambers are briefly reviewed, including narrow gap, wide gap and filmless chambers. Applications of scinti...
